Using Stem Cells to Treat Back Pain
Trained at Wayne State University, Michele Zormeier MD owns Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery and Longevity Center in Indiana, Illinois, and California. At Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center, Michele Zormeier MD offers a number of surgical, non-surgical, and regenerative services, including stem cell therapy.
Stem cells, found in a person’s brain, bone marrow, blood, skeletal tissue, skin, and fat deposits, have tremendous healing potential for chronic conditions, including degenerative disc disease.
Approximately 54 million American adults have experienced back pain in the last three months. Back pain, often associated with aging, can be debilitating and cause significant inconvenience and disruption to one’s normal activities. As one ages, the intervertebral discs in the spine begin to undergo significant cellular changes that can negatively impact the disc’s structural integrity, leading to intense pain.
Traditional therapies for degenerative disc disease include analgesics, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes such as weight loss. Surgery, including spinal fusion or disc arthroplasty, is also an option in serious cases.
Stem cell therapy is emerging as a desirable option. When stem cells are injected into the problem area, they have an anti-inflammatory effect and provide pain relief as new tissue is regenerated. Since the cells are harvested directly from the patient, the risk of rejection or complications is minimal.
Transferring stem cells to degenerating discs is an outpatient procedure that can be done in a doctor’s office under local anesthesia. Since there are no stitches, a patient leaves the office without any restrictions.

Why Warming Up and Cooling Down Are Important in Exercise
Michele Zormeier, MD, serves as the physician-owner of Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center. In this capacity, Dr. Zormeier and her team offer a wide range services from laser and cosmetic surgery to hormone replacement and nutritional medicine. Dedicated to maintaining an active lifestyle, Michele Zormeier, MD, engages in a healthy exercise routine each morning.
Many people who exercise regularly have heard of the importance of warming up and cooling down to prevent injury, but often they don’t understand how these activities benefit the body. In both situations, a person reduces the intensity of their workout and focus on maintaining activity at a slower pace. Five to ten minutes each is generally recommended.
A good warm up is designed to get the muscles ready for a full workout. It improves muscle flexibility and temperature and helps individuals gradually increase their heart and breathing rate. In addition to that, good warm ups prepare the central nervous system for a workout and ensure the body’s movement are coordinated. Ideally, warm ups should consist of whatever activity a person plans on doing for their workout.
Meanwhile, cool downs help a person reduce their heart rate gradually after exercising. It’s responsible for regulating blood flow and reducing blood pressure. Beyond that, it gives people the perfect chance to stretch their joints and muscles so their limbs don’t tighten up after working out. For most athletes, a warm up is far more important and should never be skipped or cut short. However, competitive endurance athletes may benefit more from a cool down after every workout.

What to Know about Laser Resurfacing
The owner of Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center, Michele Zormeier, MD, ensures quality facial and anti-aging patient care. Having obtained her medical degree from Wayne State University, Michele Zormeier, MD, draws on years of experience to utilize various nonsurgical cosmetic procedures like laser resurfacing.
Also referred to as lasabrasion and laser vaporization, laser resurfacing is the process of reducing wrinkles, acne scars, and other irregularities on a patient’s face or other areas of the skin. It involves exposing the skin to microbeams or pulsating light beams, which in turn remove layers of skin to achieve the desired tone and texture.
After the procedure, the skin will feel warm and appear sunburned. The physician will then prescribe the patient regimens to help the newly repaired area heal. The patient must avoid exposure to direct sunlight during this period of recovery. As the skin undergoes healing, it starts to flake.
Laser resurfacing can be performed on certain parts of the face, neck, upper chest, hands, and arms.

DNA Testing Can Improve Wellness
Michele Zormeier, MD, works hard to help her patients “look and feel their best inside and out” at Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center. With locations in Indiana and California, Michele Zormeier, MD, offers several services, including cosmetic and laser surgery, hormone replacement therapy, and nutritional medicine. Additionally, Dr. Zormeier helps her patients in their pursuit of overall wellness through DNA testing.
When patients are experiencing chronic health issues that have been difficult to diagnose, the root cause could be oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when the body is unable to manufacture the right quantity of antioxidants to balance free radicals in the blood stream. When these free radicals are allowed to run rampant, they can cause cellular damage, inflammation, and premature aging. They can even trigger a number of conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and fibromyalgia.
The body’s ability or inability to produce a sufficient number of antioxidants is linked to genetic variations. Each person’s DNA contains variants that make them unique. While some of those variants determine hair color, skin color, and other factors related to one’s appearance and personality, they can also affect one’s ability to produce critical enzymes and fight disease.
With a simple saliva test, biotechnology company 23andMe can analyze a patient’s DNA for their genetic health risks and wellness. With this information in hand, a patient and their physician can map out a treatment plan that involves medical, lifestyle, and environmental changes that will improve their overall wellness.
